| Company
Profile: Linda Decker is the manager and sole proprietor of GEM Mapping & Design located in Vernon, British Columbia. Her spouse, provides IT support, assists with projects and field work, and also has a background in forestry and tourism and with using GPS instruments. Linda was born and raised in Scarborough, Ontario and studied cartography and geology at Sir Sandford Fleming College (Natural Resources), in Lindsay, Ontario. She also has over 13 years experience working for the Ministry of Forests and Range. In February of 2002 she was selected for a 13-month contract with the Regional District of the North Okanagan to do the preparation work and implement their new GIS platform. Tasks included updating the cadastral base, creating the topology, and linking the Property Information databases with the parcel-fabric cadastral map base, and query analysis of land use, zoning and OCP. During the same year she received her Level 1 CSIA Alpine Ski Instructors Certification and the rank of First-Degree Black-Belt in TaeKwonDo. |

After completing this contract Linda took the opportunity to upgrade her skills by enrolling in the five-month ArcInfo GIS Program at Okanagan University College in Salmon Arm which she completed in Dec. 2003 with an overall average of 91%. Although there were few full-time employment opportunities in the Okanagan but lots of potential contract opportunities she launched her own business, GEM Mapping & Design in March 2004 and secured her first contract with Golder Associates in Kelowna. In 2006 she became a CSPS Ski Patroller and volunteered at Silver Star for 3 seasons. The following spring obtained her Fitness Instructor Specialist certification through Can-Fit-Pro and in the spring of 2008 she achieved the rank of 2nd Degree Black Belt in TaeKwonDo. In 2009 she became certified as Nutrition & Wellness Specialist (Can-Fit-Pro) and is now working towards her certification as a Personal Trainer. |
