GIS assists in the management of greenways, parks, forest preserves, and recreational areas which has become increasingly significant as land development progresses. These areas also act as a buffer against storm water runoff. Large areas of land are often dedicated, not only for aesthetic reasons, for public use and recreation.

GEM recognizes the ever changing needs of the resort and recreation industries, the move to year-round operations and the need for new approaches to resort development. Unique and innovative methods of mapping recreation areas are utilized by using a combination of GPS data, GIS, Image Processing, and Terrain Visualization. Projects include both downhill and cross country ski resort mapping, and route mapping for back country skiing, hiking, kayaking, eco-challenge and cycling.

GEM provides a full range of mapping services available to enable resorts and other organizations involved in recreation or tourism to efficiently manage trails, routes and run inventories, and assist in the transition from single season to multi-season use. Services offered to resorts include: site plans, trail location development, terrain analysis, advertising and graphic design.
